Blinded by oncoming headlights? 7 reasons it's not just you

You squint into the headlights, grip the wheel harder and try to get home before dark. You're in good company. Here's what's actually going on – and a simple fix that slips right over the glasses you already wear.

Sound familiar?

  • Oncoming lights fill the whole windshield, and for a few seconds you can barely see a thing.
  • You squint, ease off the gas and hunt for the edge of the road.
  • You arrive with tired eyes and stiff shoulders.
  • You turn down evening plans – or ask someone else to drive.

Then this list is for you.

1You're not alone

Most people get dazzled – few say it out loud

Glare from oncoming cars bothers far more people than you'd think. Yet hardly anyone talks about it. So many assume it's just them – that it's age, or that their eyesight is starting to go.

2It's not your imagination

Headlights really have gotten brighter

Modern LED lights are whiter and colder than the old, yellowish halogen bulbs. At the same time, more and more cars are tall SUVs that put the light right at eye level. The light coming at you on the road today is simply different from ten years ago.

3The moment

The seconds when everything goes white

You know the feeling: a pair of headlights on a dark road, and suddenly everything in front of you is just white light. You squint, ease off the gas and hope the road keeps going straight. No wonder your shoulders creep up to your ears.

Tip from Norway's road authority (Statens vegvesen): When you're dazzled, look toward the edge of the road and the road ahead – not into the light.

4If you wear glasses

Wear glasses? You get an extra dose

Eyeglass lenses give light more surfaces to reflect and scatter off, so headlights can get rings and starbursts around them. In a large AAA survey, 7 in 10 drivers who wear glasses struggled with headlight glare – versus 56% of those without glasses.

Meanwhile, many night driving glasses are made for people who don't already wear glasses. SunFit Drive is made to go right over yours.

5What nobody talks about

Your evenings disappear – bit by bit

You don't stop driving. You just stop driving after dark. You leave dinner early, skip the concert and let someone else drive. And for a good part of the year, it's already dark when you drive home from work.

6The fix

Yellow lenses take the edge off harsh light

SunFit Drive has yellow lenses that soften the cold, blue-white glare of LED lights. Light from oncoming cars feels softer, and you don't have to squint as much. The goal is simple: a calmer drive home.

We don't promise night vision – no glasses can give you that. But harsh light doesn't have to stab at your eyes.

7Easy

Right over your glasses – ready in the glove box

You don't need new prescription glasses. SunFit Drive slips right over the glasses you already have, and on the Pro model the side lenses also soften light from the side and in your mirrors. The frame is light, so it stays comfortable all the way home.

Keep a pair in the glove box – or one in each car.

Over regular glasses in a couple of seconds.

Without

  • Harsh, blue-white LED light straight in your eyes
  • Squinting and hunting for the edge of the road
  • Tired eyes when you arrive
  • Evenings you'd rather stay home

With SunFit Drive

  • Softer light from oncoming cars
  • Less to squint at
  • Fits right over your glasses
  • A more relaxed drive after dark

What we don't promise

No glasses give you night vision, and SunFit Drive is not a medical device. The glasses make harsh light softer – they don't make the night brighter. If your night vision has changed a lot in the past year, get an eye exam. It could be something like an early cataract.

Questions and answers

Will they fit over my glasses?

Yes, that's what they're made for. SunFit Drive Pro is 15 cm (5.9 in) wide with a 4.5 cm (1.8 in) lens height, so your glasses should be narrower and shorter than that. Luna and Classic have slightly different measurements – see the size guide on the product page.

Won't it be too dark?

The lenses are yellow, not dark like sunglasses. They're made to soften the harsh, white light from oncoming cars – not to make everything darker.

Will I look odd in them?

Maybe a little – they are yellow, after all. But it's dark, you're in your own car, and you're the one who gets to stop squinting into the light.

Which model should I choose?

Pro is a wrap-around with yellow side lenses that also soften light from the side. Luna has a larger, oversized frame, and Classic a square frame. All three go over your glasses.

What if I'm not happy with them?
